At Sherbourne, students from Prep to Grade 6 attend a weekly Japanese session in a classroom dedicated to the program. Based upon the Victorian Curriculum, the program is organised into two dimensions – communicating and understanding. The focus is on using the language to communicate through speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Understanding will develop students’ knowledge of the connections between the Japanese language and culture. We encourage curiosity and openness as we explore the similarities and differences between these. Songs, games, role-plays as well as the use of computers and iPads are incorporated into Japanese lessons.
Our whole school Japanese Festival Day, incursions such as the Japanese Storyteller and involvement in the International Karuta Project all support and enrich the program.
