Wellbeing

At Sherbourne Primary School, we support social and emotional learning through our evidence-based SWPBS and SEL programs, helping students build resilience, empathy, and positive relationships. Alongside this, we offer a wide range of extracurricular activities and targeted strategies to meet the needs of each individual learner.

Our wellbeing framework is built on a tiered approach:

  • Tier 1 — Universal Supports
What this looks like: Whole-school programs that support every child. This includes weekly SEL lessons, school-wide expectations of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible, positive behaviour recognition, lunchtime clubs, and whole-school wellbeing days.
  • Tier 2 — Targeted Supports
What this looks like: Extra support for small groups of students who need a little more help. This may include small-group reading or maths support, social skills groups, lunchtime check-ins, or short-term intervention programs.
  • Tier 3 — Specialised Supports
What this looks like: Individualised support for students with significant and complex needs. This may involve personalised learning plans, one-on-one education support, or working closely with outside specialists such as speech therapists, psychologists, or other agencies.

By working in this way, we ensure that every child is supported — academically, socially, emotionally, culturally, and physically.

To support our wellbeing model, we use a range of strategies that help students feel safe, calm, and ready to learn. These include:

  • Calm Spaces — quiet areas in classrooms or around the school where students can take a short break to reset and regulate their emotions.
  • Zones of Regulation — a practical framework that helps students recognise their feelings, understand how those feelings impact their learning, and use strategies to return to a “ready to learn” state.
  • Sensory Garden — a dedicated outdoor space that provides a calming environment for students to explore, reflect, and reset during the school day.
  • Restorative Practice — a positive approach to resolving conflict, encouraging students to reflect on their actions, repair relationships, and build stronger connections with others.

These strategies work alongside our SWPBS and SEL programs, ensuring we meet the needs of the whole child in a supportive, caring, and inclusive environment.
