Physical Education

All students from Prep – 6 take part in a 50 minute PE skills lesson each week. Senior School (3-6) classes take part in an additional sports session each Friday.

Students in grades 5 and 6 all participate in Friday Summer and Winter Interschool Sport where th

ey train and compete against other primary schools in our local area.

Sherbourne has strong links with our local community, with many sports groups delivering clinics to our students at various times throughout the year.

At Sherbourne we run our own Swimming and Athletics Carnivals for grade 3 to 6 students as well as a whole school Cross Country Run. During all events students are selected for further levels of competition.

Additional PE related ‘special days’ that run annually include our Footy Day (dress up and AFL skills) and the Billy Cart Grand Prix.

Sherbourne encourages students to walk, ride or scoot to school and we have designated bike and scooter parking racks

Cultural Diversity

At Sherbourne Primary School, our Cultural Diversity program is offered as a specialist

subject, giving students the opportunity to explore languages and cultures from around the world.

As part of the program, students learn German through the Goethe Institute’s curriculum, featuring the much-loved puppets Felix the Frog and Franzi the Duck. Using interactive materials, short video clips and e

ngaging activities, lessons are tailored to suit every year level. Students practise basic German conversation and vocabulary for topics such as feelings, colours, animals, food, clothing, numbers, and weather. They also discover unique cultural aspects of life in Germany.

Beyond language learning, students engage with a rich variety of cultures. Lessons draw on their own backgrounds and experiences, and we celebrate significant cultural events throughout the year. So far, we’ve enjoyed Harmony Day, NAIDOC Week and German Fasching/Karneval, and have acknowledged the importance of Reconciliation Week- with more to come. Students will also have the chance to share their own cultural heritage, helping us celebrate the diversity that makes our school community so vibrant.

STEM

At Sherbourne Primary School, we are proud to offer all of our students a comprehensive STEM Program. STEM uses an inquiry approach to integrate skills and content from the areas of Science, Technology (Design and Digital), Engineering and Maths.

During STEM lessons, students will be guided to make their own discoveries and solve problems through a range of challenges, experiments and hands on activities. Lessons will explore the main areas of Science, while applying the scientific, design and engineering processes.

STEM aims to develop key skills including problem solving, creativity, critical analysis and digital literacy. There is also a strong focus on collaborative learning, team work and communication.

Visual Art

All students in Prep to Grade 6 have a weekly Visual Art session in our purpose built art room. Our comprehensive and sequential program is based on the Victorian Curriculum and features painting, printing, construction, threads and textiles and modelling.

Visual art activities focus on artistic expression and skill development, complement our Inquiry units of work and foster the children’s appreciation of art.
ICT devices are incorporated into the Visual Arts program, used as a valuable tool for research and inspiration.

A big focus at Sherbourne is the celebration and display of the work of our students. All areas of the school feature frequently updated displays of Art and Inquiry based work creations. Clay modelling features regularly in the Art program and having our own kiln in the Art room enables work to be fired on site. Many children maintain a collection of their clay pieces, progressing from Prep through to Year 6.
